2018 Analysis of Hole Quality in Drilling of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite with Uncoated WC Drill

The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in manufacturing of automotive, marine, sport, chemical and biological equipment is gradually increasing as well as aerospace industry. Especially, the need for drilling of these materials in tolerance of low roughness and suitable roundness because of requirement to high strength in assembly parts is an important safety problem for aerospace industry. The hole surface integrity and delamination occurred in drilling of the CFRP materials, which change depending on their characteristics properties which are anisotropy, heterogeneity and laminated structure, and so affect the hole quality. Also, the thermomechanical responses (e.g., cutting force, cutting temperature, chip formation) changing according to cutting conditions such as tool geometry, cutting speed and feed rate are negatively affect the machinability of the CFRP. For these reasons, the selection of drill geometry and drilling parameters has high importance due to in drilling of carbon fiber reinforced polymer which has anisotropy, heterogeneity and laminated structure. This study focused on the effects of drilling parameters on the hole quality in drilling of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites by applying constant and varying feed rate with uncoated tungsten carbide.
